Around this time of year, hockey involves a lot of math.
Here’s the rundown. Toronto now sits 2nd in the Atlantic thanks to their win over Buffalo, and Detroit’s win over Ottawa. As of right now, Montreal is the only Atlantic team in playoffs, in fact, they’ve guaranteed themselves 1st in the division.
Believe it or not, Carolina, Tampa Bay and NY Islanders could still theoretically make it in.
Anyway, the clinching scenario. So if Toronto beats Washington tonight, and Tampa Bay loses to Boston in regulation time, Toronto is guaranteed a seat in playoffs. As of this morning, Toronto’s projected playoff opponent is the Ottawa Senators.
But hey, 4 games is a long time in the first week of April.
