ORILLIA – Orillia Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) along with the Orillia Crime Unit is currently investigating a robbery that occurred on Monday, Apr. 3, 2017 at approximately 9 p.m. A suspect armed with a knife entered the Esso Gas Station on Colborne Street East in Orillia, assaulted an employee and fled the scene on foot. Officers responded immediately and the suspect was arrested a short distance away.
The victim was transported to a local hospital with serious, non-life threatening injuries.
The OPP Forensic Identification Unit, OPP K-9 Unit as well as the OPP Emergency Response Team (ERT) attended and conducted a thorough search of the area for evidence.
The Orillia Detachment of the OPP has charged, Ian Chapman, age 29, of Orillia with the following offences:
• Aggravated assault contrary to Section 268 of the Criminal Code
• Robbery contrary to Section 344(1)(b) of the Criminal Code
• Breach of probation contrary to Section 733.1(1) of the Criminal Code
The accused was held in custody and scheduled to appear at the Ontario Court of Justice in Barrie on Apr. 7, 2017.
