The two boaters were lucky one of their cell phones still had enough battery left to call 9-1-1.
An 18 foot Bayliner vessel ran out of fuel on Lake Simcoe just around 10pm Wednesday night. The call to dispatch came from the operator of the boat, who said he only had one life jacket on baord and 6% left on his phone battery.
South Simcoe Police Marine Rescue were able to locate the boat. After towing it to shore, the 24 year-old operator of the boat was charged for not having enough life jackets for all occupants on board.
Police say this could’ve taken a tragic turn, and that this is a lesson to be properly prepared in case of emergencies on the water.
