The Detroit Red Wings and the NHL find themselves in an awkward place right in the middle of violent protests in Charlottesville, Virginia.
A white nationalist group, calling themselves “The Detroit Right Wings,” have been using the NHL team’s logo on mock riot-gear, contrary to the team’s trademark.
The Detroit Red Wings and the NHL both released separate statements regarding the use of the logo, with the Red Wings posting the following to their social media:
In their statement, the league said use of the Red Wings logo by white nationalist groups is contrary to the league’s values of inclusiveness. The NHL and the Red Wings will pursue legal action.
Protests in Charlottesville reached peak violence this past Saturday, resulting in multiple deaths, including two police officers.
Charlottesville currently sits under a state of emergency.
